Nature Journaling in the Pine Bush: Character of a Tree

Join us to spend some time appreciating the Pine Bush Preserve while we exercise our creativity through nature journaling. This program is suitable for adults.

Friday, April 4, 2025 | 7:00 pm
Join Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission staff for a walk through the Pine Bush to watch the elaborate flight displays of the American Woodcock. We will start inside with a presentation and then continue outside for a 0.9 mile-hike. Suitable for ages 8+.

Saturday, April 5, 2025 | 10:00 am
Our experts will guide you along a 1.8-mile hike over rolling sand dunes where we will explore a globally rare, nationally significant and locally distinct ecosystem. Suitable for ages 8+.

Want to get into birding, but don't know where to start? Come explore the Yellow Trail at Karner Barrens as we walk through the preserve and look for birds! Suitable for ages 11-17 with an adult.

Come learn about what makes skunk cabbage unique and the important role it plays in the ecosystem. We'll walk, chat, and explore the pine barrens vernal pond community where they are found within the preserve. Suitable for ages 8+.

We will learn about the American woodcock, an enigmatic woodland "shorebird" that has been declining in number since the 1960s, and how you can help us monitor them in the preserve.

Science Lecture: Butterfly and moth diversity in the Albany Pine Bush Preserve

This lecture will explore the reasons behind the high diversity of Lepidoptera in barrens habitats, highlight the species found in the preserve, and explain how these species are managed and monitored to both protect them and to learn how management decisions are affecting the preserve overall. Suitable for tweens, teens and adults.
