The Karner blue (Plebejus melissa samuelis) is an endangered butterfly whose decline has been the result of the destruction, fragmentation, and degradation of pine barren and oak savanna ecosystems. The Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission (APBPC) has been actively recovering the preserve’s Karner blue population by restoring pitch pine–scrub oak barrens and by accelerating the colonization of newly restored areas through release of captive-reared animals. Results of population and habitat monitoring suggest that recovery efforts are succeeding, but further study is necessary to ensure that recovery is maintained and to document the effects of continuing recovery efforts and the influence of long-term processes such as climate change. Join us this evening for a lecture by APBPC Conservation Biologist Steven Campbell, PhD as he details recovery efforts of Karner blues in the preserve.
