SPEAKER: Jeff Corbin
The Albany Pine Bush Preserve is a unique and special place, hosting unique plants and animals not usually found in the northeast. But the conditions that give rise to its open, savannah-like state - its deep, sandy soils, are actually much more widespread in New York than previously recognized. I will describe work that I carried out to map soils that could support pine barren and sandplain ecosystems. Short answer - there is a lot: More than 20 times the area of known high-quality habitat. Our work has important implications for understanding these ecosystems' past - and how to ensure their future.
Suitable for adults.
