An Ecological History of the Albany Pine Bush, Albany, NY
Join us this evening for a senior capstone presentation by Paul Smiths College student Skylar Murphy. The study’s main focus was to conduct the first paleoecological exploratory investigations of the wetlands located in the Albany Pine Bush Preserve (APBP). Paleoecology allows us to look backward in time thousands of years to see the long-term ecological history of an area. These samples can provide a continuous environmental history of not only plant diversity through trapped pollen but also regionalized fires indicated by remnant charcoal. New information gathered from the study reveals a gap in the story of the Albany Pine Bush history from 6,600 -10,600 years ago, and these findings open the door to future investigations regarding the plant and fire histories of the unique Albany Pine Bush ecosystem.
