Preserve Management: Tree Removal 2021

The Yellow Trail in Karner Barrens will be temporarily CLOSED starting at 2 PM on December 31, 2020. Please view the interactive trail map to see the tree removal locations.

The closure is due to tree removal work that will be taking place along the Yellow Trail at two locations. The yellow trail will remain closed for 6-8 weeks until this work is completed. The Blue trail in Karner Barrens and the Discovery Trail will remain OPEN.

Additional Information
Over the past twenty years the Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission has been restoring wildlife habitat by removing invasive trees from selected areas of the preserve. During the late fall/winter of 2020 habitat restoration work will begin in several areas of the preserve in Guilderland, Colonie and Albany.

Tree thinning will begin on 27 acres of preserve land near Route 155, Rifle Range Road, Apollo Drive and VFW Drive.  In early spring 2021 these sites will have stumps removed and will then be graded and planted with native species.

Successful wildlife habitat management in some areas of the preserve initially requires the selective removal of trees.  Heavy logging equipment is used to remove the invasive trees and stumps and the site is then graded in preparation for planting. In the spring of 2021 the sites will be planted with a variety of native wildflowers and prairie grasses.  Shrubs and trees will also eventually be added to the sites.  In three to five years these areas will begin to exhibit characteristics of high quality pine barrens that typify the Pine Bush.

Surface of Discovery Loop trail temporarily uneven

The Discovery Loop Trail is temporarily only universally accessible from the service road to the council ring. A section of the trail surface was recently damaged and another section currently has a loose gravel surface. We apologize for this temporary disruption and are working to fix these problems.
