Pitch pine is the dominant tree species in the inland pitch pine-scrub oak barrens community of the Albany Pine Bush. It is an evergreen tree that grows well in nutrient poor soil and is adapted for surviving wildland fire. Pitch pine needles grow in stiff clusters of three and their open cones are rounded with spiky points.
