20 Mile Challenge

Hike 20 miles of the Albany Pine Bush Preserve trail system!

We're working to encourage Capital Region residents to become part of a community that protects the unique habitat at the Albany Pine Bush Preserve. We help people get out to enjoy nature and seize opportunities to engage and participate in local learning and scientific research.

As part of this effort, we've created the 20 Mile Challenge. People are asked to hike 20 miles of the Albany Pine Bush Preserve trail system and enjoy the full range of landscapes, flora, and fauna that the globally rare pine barrens has to offer.

Participants can walk the trails on their own or with your family group. Upon completing the challenge, you can claim a reward at the Discovery Center Gift Shop.

Another way to participate!

The Weekend Wanderer Challenge is to complete all of the trails in the Preserve in a 48 hour period. Hike them over a traditional weekend, or whatever 2 consecutive days best fit your schedule.  Pick a time when all of the trails in the Preserve are open, track your progress on the 20 Mile Challenge form and write "Weekend Wanderer" on your form when you submit it.  You will earn a special Weekend Wanderer prize!
