Pitch pine (Pinus rigida) has a broad distribution across New York State from Long Island and New York City north to the Canadian border, and west along the state line with Pennsylvania to Cattaraugus County. NY Natural Heritage Program Chief Ecologist Greg Edinger will present an overview of the natural communities in the state that have pitch pine as a characteristic species (10 natural communities) or present as a minor associate (6 natural communities). Greg will explain how ecologists classify natural communities even though many communities share the same species. He will review the ecological processes, such as fire, drought, and heat stress that help pitch pine to thrive and keep these natural communities viable into the future.

From I-87 take exit 2W (Rt 5 West, Central Avenue). Follow Rt 5 for about 2 miles then turn left onto Rt 155 (New Karner Rd). Continue on Rt 155 for about 1.2 miles. The Discovery Center is located on the left at 195 New Karner Road. (518)456-0655
