As the hot days of summer continue into August, the native wildflowers and warm season grasses planted into restoration sites this past spring have pushed their roots deep into the sandy soils.

Often going several feet deep in search of water, when the surface soils are dry and hot, many of these Pine Bush plants like horsemint (pictured), New Jersey tea, Indian grass, lupine, butterfly milkweed, little bluestem grass, and bush clover are also flowering and producing seeds. As these plants become established they are the foundation of a long process, restoring these sites to the pine barrens they once were 75-100 years ago.
