This training: Join us for an informative training on winter birds! We will discuss how to identify local species, use eBird to share your sightings, and get involved in the 2026 Great Backyard Bird Count, an annual, worldwide count of birds by community scientists.

The Survey: Volunteers will join staff at the Albany Pine Bush on an hour-long (8-9am) birding walk through the preserve, working together to record and count birds, which will be compiled into a single eBird checklist. We will survey as a group starting at the Karner Barrens Trailhead. Binoculars will be provided if needed. There are several other sites in Albany County hosting Great Backyard Bird Counts including Thatcher State Park (Friday 2/13 10am-11am), Tivoli Nature Preserve (Sunday 2/15 1pm-2pm), and Ann Lee Nature Preserve (Monday 10am-11am).

All volunteers are required to complete volunteer forms prior to volunteering with the preserve. These forms can be completed online, and information will be provided upon your registration.
