900 pitch pine tree seedlings planted in the preserve.
In late May 2018, 900 pitch pine tree seedlings were planted in the preserve by staff and volunteers.
By Joel Hecht, Stewardship Director
In most parts of the preserve where mature pitch pine trees are nearby the seeds naturally produce more seedlings that grow into trees and seedling planting is not necessary. However, in some areas, such as Blueberry Hill East, there are few if any pitch pine nearby as a seed source. In this case these recently planted seedlings will play a significant role in the restoration of these sites from previous locust forests to the pine barrens of the future.
