November 2024 Volunteer of the Month
November 06, 2024
Meet November 2024 Volunteer of the month, Ron Fleshman!
His enthusiasm for teaching kids and his patient and kind approach are great assets to the Help-a-Habitat program.
By Sarah Reilly
Years before becoming an APBPC Volunteer, Ron had already become a treasured part of the Pine Bush Preserve. An amazing supporter of public programs, sharing his love of the Pine Bush and his keen interest in learning, it was natural for him to become a volunteer with the preserve.
Growing up in Watervliet, Ron moved to the Albany area in 1979. He and his wife would ride horseback through the Pine Bush, initially connecting himself to the preserve. He was an avid scuba diver, commercial diver, and a competitive rifle shooter. Ron worked for Verizon, retiring 2023. He now enjoys spending his time hiking, amateur radio, radio astronomy, citizen science projects and observing wildlife. His favorite trail within the preserve is Kings Highway Barrens.
An active participant in our community science programs for a number of years, in 2023 Ron completed his training to also become a volunteer program assistant- logging hours helping staff lead programs in classrooms and out on the trails! When asked his favorite part of volunteering, Ron said it was “Watching people learn about and enjoy nature” and “the excitement of the children during school programs”.
Ron was nominated by Erin Kinal, the APBPC’s Education Director, for all his help as a Program Assistant. She noted some of his actions from earlier this year: “Ron stepped forward this spring and took on a leadership role in his position as Volunteer Program Assistant facilitating the Discovery Center scavenger hunt with visiting school groups. His enthusiasm for teaching kids and his patient and kind approach are great assets to the Help-a-Habitat program. Ron has always answered the call for help, and we are truly grateful. Thank you, Ron for your dedication to the Albany Pine Bush and for your commitment to enriching the lives of visitors through learning in this globally unique landscape!”
Congratulations Ron- we are fortunate to have you as part of our team of volunteers!
