June 2024 Volunteer of the Month
June 20, 2024
Bob Mitchell is Volunteer of the Month for June 2024!
Starting to volunteer in 2022 after learning about the prescribed fire program, Bob remains a valuable member of the burn crew. Introduced to volunteering by his son, he has enjoyed working with a team of wildland fire professionals and making newfound friends from the team along the way.
A 35-year resident of Guilderland, Bob and his wife raised two sons. He joined the Albany Pine Bush fire crew shortly after retiring. He enjoys that he can be part of a team who “continuously share their fire experience and provide an environment to learn more about Pine Bush fire ecology and the various skills required to successfully manage and complete prescribed burns”. Spending so much time out in the preserve, Bob especially enjoys the time of year when there are fields of lupine and is a fan of white-tailed deer.
When not out on a burn, Bob enjoys other outdoor activities including hiking, kayaking, fishing, and hunting. If a friend is working on a home project, he will also lend himself to being a handyman.
Nominator is Fire Manager Tyler Briggs, who noted that “Bob has been a pleasure to work with. He is a safe firefighter and always gets along well with the other crew members. Bob is good at firing, holding, and UTV operation.” Not only is Bob both skilled and reliable, but that “the crew is stronger with Bob on it”. His dedication to the team is clear and appreciated. Thank you for sharing your talents with the APBP, Bob!
