Spiders evoke a combination of horror and fascination due to their unusual biology and a few venomous species, but their behavior and ecology are far more interesting than is commonly known. Spiders are the dominant terrestrial predators on Earth with a major impact in most ecosystems.  Spiders are estimated to eat prey the weight of all humans on earth on an annual basis.  While spiders are consummate predators, they have evolved a stunning array of adaptations to avoid being eaten by their own diverse predators. In this presentation, Dr. Linda S. Rayor, from the Department of Entomology at Cornell University will focus on the interesting biology of spiders, their importance in ecosystems, the major predators on spiders, and the likely denizens of both groups found in the Albany Pine Bush Preserve.
