This program is suitable for ages 10+

Join us for a bird outing that aims to be accessible and inclusive. Start your day looking and listening for birds at a stationary location in the Albany Pine Bush with the Preserve Naturalist, Pammi Price, and other community members. We’ll experience the wonder of birds at the Albany Pine Bush from learning to use binoculars to identifying birds by sight and sound!

We’ll meet at the entrance to the Discovery Center where we will get to know one another a little bit before we take a short stroll (approximately 0.13 miles) to the Council Ring where we will stop to look and listen for birds. There is a half-round seating area that participants can use during the event. No experience is necessary and you are welcome to join us for as long as you’d like.

If you have your own binoculars or monocular feel free to bring them along. We will have binoculars (8x21mm and 8x25mm) and bird guides available for participants use during the program, please let us know when you register if you would like to borrow any of them. Also please let us know if we can help with access or other accommodations to make it easier for you to join us and connect with birds and other community members!

Trail Details: The Discovery Trail and Council Ring substrate is Flexi-pave, the minimum trail width is 38 inches, and the slope is approximately two to three percent; the sidewalk is concrete, and the parking lot is asphalt.

Restrooms: There are accessible restrooms inside the Discovery Center.

Sensory Sensitivities: The area where we will be watching birds is next to the public trail, so other preserve visitors may be walking through from time to time. The place where we will be stopping to explore the birds, the Council Ring, is not far from the parking lot, within earshot of the New York State Thruway, a rifle range, and the Albany Airport is nearby. So, we will most likely be able to hear traffic noise, aircraft noise, gunshots, or other sounds in the background.
