Named for the prayer-like position of its front legs, the praying mantis is an impressive predatory insect. They have perfected the art of surprise, using camouflage to conceal themselves before an ambush, and at times demonstrating great patience as they stalk their prey. A praying mantis eats a wide variety of insects and has been known to even capture hummingbirds. They are considered a beneficial insect to have nearby as they consume insects that may be harmful to gardens.
