The scientific name of the inland barrens buckmoth is Hemileuca maia maia. Adult moths emerge in late September - early October. Their wing span is approximately 2-3”. These moths have no functional mouth parts, they mate, lay eggs and perish in about 2 days. As a larva, they feed on scrub oak leaves. You may see buckmoth caterpillars on the trail in June and July as they disperse and search for a sandy place to pupate.
